A shared journey in vocational education

LearningbyGoing focuses on cooperation, mobility, and professional exchange. The project explores how institutions can learn from one another, connect educational practice with real-world needs, and open new pathways for learners and educators.

Our Project

This project, under the project management of GBS St.Gallen is intended to promote collaboration between various Canadian vocational training providers (institutes of technology, colleges, trade schools.) and stakeholders (CFA-FCA, BCCIE, CBIE), as well as Swiss vocational training represented by the two vocational schools (GBS St. Gallen, Olten vocational school) and other stakeholders (CH Consulate General in British Columbia, associations, companies, ...).

Canada, as a priority country for exchange and mobility from a Swiss perspective (Movetia), has many similarities but also differences in terms of social, economic and educational policy.

This project aims to network vocational training in both countries in appropriate areas for the first time, which will lead to an important strengthening of the perception and appeal of vocational training.

By Creating a living network with exchange between companies, VET-Providers and authorities, this project allows to foster the possebilities and recognition of apprenticeship programs and on the job learning.

The project was positively received by both (Consulate General of in Vancouver, Movetia) and the Western Canadian education providers involved (BCIT, SAIT, Douglas College, ...) and is supported by all sides.

'Growing by Sharing' and 'Learning by Going' - in an everchanging social and economic environment, tailoring training to the needs of the economy and companies is vital for vocational training. This ensures long-term economic success in an environment in which well-trained specialists and innovative training concepts are a very important asset.

These are key reasons why the success of international cooperation is just as important for Canada as it is for Switzerland.

A cooperation project in vocational training between Canada and Switzerland requires careful planning and consideration of various aspects in order to be successful. These are the key points:

 1.   Education systems and structures

  • Differences and similarities: Understanding the differences and similarities between the vocational education systems of both countries.
  • Knowledge about educational programs and recognition of qualifications: Check the form in which training takes place and how qualifications and certificates correspond to one another.
  • Curricula and standards: Comparing and coordinating curricula and standards in order to identify common interests and align further work within the project accordingly.

2.    Social and cultural differences

  •  Work culture: Recognize and name differences in work culture and ethics as a   basis for project collaboration.
  •  Intercultural competencies: Build up know-how and provide training for   intercultural competencies.

3.    Legal and regulatory framework

  •  Visas and work permits: regulations for visas and work permits. Check   internship approvals for ex-change programs and prepare for their application
